• The New York State Medicaid program allows individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses to hire and direct their assistants (PAs).
• The program allows the individual to choose who provides their care and how it is provided.
• PAs can be family members, friends, or hired professionals.
• The individual receiving care is considered the employer and is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising their PAs.
• PAs can provide various services, including bathing, dressing, feeding, medication management, and transportation.
